As I read about the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) investigating OpenAI’s ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) system, over concerns of it spreading false information, I found myself mulling over a whirlwind of questions. So, I decided to dive deeper and share my thoughts with you.
The Enigma Of False information
Imagine this: you’re at a party, and a game of Chinese Whispers starts. A whisper starts at one end of the room, and by the time it reaches the other end, the message has morphed into something hilariously unrecognizable. This is misinformation in its simplest form. Now, imagine this game being played across the globe, at lightning speed, with the whispers being amplified through a giant megaphone. That’s the scale of misinformation we’re dealing with on social media.
Suddenly, a new guest arrives at the party – AI. This guest doesn’t just whisper; it generates new whispers based on what it has heard before. And it can do this incredibly quickly, outpacing even the fastest human whisperers. This amplifies the potential for misinformation to spread exponentially.
But here’s where it gets intriguing. As soon as AI enters the scene, there’s a sudden outcry about the dangers of misinformation. But this outcry isn’t coming from just anyone – it’s coming from the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Wait a minute, wasn’t this game of whispers going on all along on social media? Why is the FTC suddenly concerned?
This situation seems to present a paradox. Misinformation isn’t a new phenomenon. It’s been happening for years on social media. Yet, when AI becomes a player in the game, the FTC suddenly takes notice. It’s as though AI has held up a mirror to an issue that’s been simmering for a long time.

The question now is, why is the FTC so afraid? And more importantly, what can we do to ensure that the game of whispers doesn’t spiral out of control?

On the flip side, the onus is also on the AI developers. They need to ensure they’re transparent about what their AI can and can’t do, and warn users about potential inaccuracies.
