What’s the story behind your nickname?
We all have one. A name that is not ours by birthright but bestowed upon us by friends, family, or even through our own quirks. A name that, over time, becomes an integral part of our identity. For me, that name is ‘Subi.’
The origin of my nickname is straightforward enough. ‘Subi’ is a distilled version of my last name, Subijano, which, for reasons that still elude me, proved quite the tongue twister for folks growing up.
Whether it was teachers doing roll call or teammates cheering me on during a sports match, the pronunciation of Subijano had a knack for leaving people stumbling and stammering. My name, it seemed, was an unanticipated linguistic hurdle that many just couldn’t vault.
As often happens in such situations, a solution was quickly found – a nickname. And so, ‘Subi’ was born. This short, catchy name had everything going for it. It was easy to pronounce, remember, and shout across a field when the need arose.
Subi became more than just a convenience, though. Over time, it evolved into a part of my identity. It was a name that traveled with me through school corridors, across sports fields, and into the hearts of my friends. It was no longer just a shorter form of my last name; it was a moniker that encapsulated shared memories, achievements, and bonds.
So, that’s the story behind Subi – a tale born out of linguistic convenience, but one that has since taken on a life of its own. And as for the original, longer version? Well, Subijano has grown quite fond of its breezy, popular little sibling!
