There’s a unique joy in watching someone you love discover something new—like watching the first steps of a child or the blossoming of a flower. As a parent and an AI enthusiast, these two worlds often converge for me in the most awe-inspiring ways. Let me share a recent moment that got me absolutely thrilled.

A Young Aquanaut

My 4-year-old son recently mastered the art of swimming, diving underwater like a little fish, discovering a whole new universe beneath the surface. Every splash, every smile, every achievement, no matter how small, fills me with an overwhelming sense of pride and joy.

The Miracle of Learning

Observing my son’s newfound swimming prowess got me thinking about how we, as humans, learn. We adapt, improvise, and evolve, painting the canvas of our lives one stroke at a time. And it’s not just us—our creations are doing the same.

AI: A Different Kind of Learner

In the realm of Artificial Intelligence, this process is mimicked through machine learning algorithms. Just as my son learns to navigate water, AI learns to navigate data. Granted, it’s not exactly the same—the emotional and experiential components are missing—but the underlying principle remains: learning from input to become better at a given task.

The most fascinating aspect for me is how generative AI—such as ChatGPT—is capable of becoming increasingly nuanced in understanding human dialogue and context. They can learn from the patterns they’ve been trained on, adapting and fine-tuning their responses to better engage with users. Just as my son learns the difference between floating and diving, AI algorithms learn the nuance between answering a query and generating creative text.

It’s important to clarify that while these two forms of learning are analogous, they are by no means equal in value. My son’s achievements in swimming aren’t just points on a data graph; they’re milestones on a journey of growth and discovery. In contrast, AI’s ‘achievements’ are mathematical optimizations—impressive but devoid of the emotional depth that makes human learning so extraordinary.
