When was the first time you really felt like a grown up (if ever)?

Introduction

The moment you feel like a grown-up isn’t when you pay your first bill or even when you put on that military uniform for the first time. For me, it was stepping into the role of a husband and father. Just like AI evolves through learning, so did my understanding of what it means to be an adult.

Suit Up: My Military Adventure

The military gives you discipline, structure, and responsibility—often considered markers of adulthood. It’s like coding your first AI program. There’s a sense of achievement, but you’re working within set parameters, predefined by others.

A Whole New Level: Entering Parenthood

Then comes parenthood. Now you’re in a realm that’s as unpredictable as machine learning algorithms trained on vast and varied datasets. Children don’t come with instruction manuals. Neither do some of the most complex AI models. They adapt, evolve, and teach you just as much as you teach them.

The Adulting Algorithm

Let’s face it: parenting is a real-time, 24/7 task that involves adaptive problem-solving. Sound familiar? It’s how AI works! Machine learning algorithms get smarter over time, adapting to new data and making better decisions. As a parent, I’m continually tweaking my own “adulting algorithm” to better meet my family’s needs.

Dad and Data: The AIs in My Life

Parenting and AI also require ethical considerations. Whether I’m teaching my child about right and wrong or implementing ethical AI practices, the stakes are high. The impact of my actions will echo into the future, shaping not just one life but potentially millions.

Adulthood is not a destination; it’s an ever-changing journey. So is the field of AI. Both are about growth, adaptation, and continuous learning. And both have made me who I am today: a grown-up still fascinated by what’s to come.
